Expanding Foam Explained

Expanding Foam Explained

The versatile nature of Expanding Polyurethane Foam mixed with increasingly fast track building methods mean Foam expanding usage has grown significantly over recent years. There are now several product variations available. Below is a brief review and explanation of the products now on offer , including Important dos and don'ts associated with expanded foam usage.

Hand Held foam

"Hand Held" or "straw foam" is a ready to use aerosol type foam which has a simple applicator tube screwed onto the valve at the top of the can. Conventional Hand Held Foams need to be used in a short time range and cannot be re-used.

Exact Gap foam filler

"Exact Gap" is a new concept in expanding filler foams that offers minimal expansion for precise filling of gaps. This means there is less waste material to cut back afterwards and the risk of foam spilling out into the surrounding surfaces is vastly reduced. This also offers a solution to the problem of disposing hazardous waste.

Gun Grade expanding foam

"Gun Grade" - also referred to as Gun Foam is formulated in a different way to Hand Held Foam. This gives a higher extrusion rate (i.e faster) . The expandable foam is dispensed using an expanding foam gun attached to the foam can, this can then be left on the to be used at a later date. This type of foam is suitable for regular use.

Longer Life / Re-Usable Foams

"Longer Life Foams" these are similar to the Hand Held type but use a metal valve instead of a rubber one.

This extends the shelf life to 24 months; the product can be re-used over a 2-3 month period.

Fire Rated Expanding Foams

Standard expanding foam filler are usually classed as self extinguishing, i.e. they won't support flames but do not offer protection against it. Fire Rated Foams Sealants are now available (in both Hand and Gun Grades) with varying levels of Fire Retardency. This product achieves Fire Ratings in applications such as around door frames, internal wall and ceiling gaps and pipe access openings. Fire Rated Foams must be tested to BS476.
