Passive fire protection

Passive fire protection construction components are used to withstand, retard and isolate flames and the associated smoke and fumes in the event of a building fire: however they do not in themselves extinguish the flames hence they are classed as 'passive protection'.

A key design requirement for a passive fire protection system is centred on public safety - the guarantee of a specific resistance / retardation time to evacuate a building. Times vary between 30 minutes and up to 4 hours retardation, this is dependent on the application and type of product installed.

Due to the makeup of these components smoke and flame damage is drastically reduced. The passive fire protection systems also enable emergency services to carry out their job in a more controlled environment.

Intumescent products

Intumescent products expand (or intumesce) up to several times their original size when exposed to high temperatures. This expansion prevents the spread of flames and smoke to other parts of a building. Such intumescent products are available in pipe clamps, pipe wraps, door seals and a number of other applications.

Intumescent seals

Intumescent seals are all independently tested and certified to national standards this is to ensure that they will perform to a specified rating in the event of a fire - for example retain their integrity for 30 minutes.

Fire rated products

Fire rated products are fire resistant / flame retardant and offer some passive resistance they however are not intumescent and do not expand when exposed to heat or flames. These are sometimes still preferred in some cases for general construction purposes in place of standard products that do not offer a rating of any kind.

Non Rated Products such as metal letter plates or louvre covers are not fire rated but intended to be used in conjunction with products which are, such as intumescent letterbox liners or intumescent grilles.
